This article is worth a week of evening work and a priming saturday.
On monday, my 2 new re-ordered pieces arrived. I started of with the E606PP.
Clecoed it in place in the elevator and checked the alignment of the holes. Instead of matchdrilling through the already dimpled holes, I decided not to do that and just to drill through each pilot hole.
Then dimpled them and countersunk them. This avoid a lot of problems with possibly ruining my dimples of my skin.0
Countersinking did not go well this time. The flange is really small and although I clamped a block underneath to have control the pilot dril, I managed to make really bad looking countersinks.
2 of them were terrible. On the outer edge, and one in the middle. The picture below shows the one on the outer edge. I was not happy with the quality of the work but as many say: 'build on'...
It will defenitly look better on my second plane.
Anyway, this piece sits squeezed between the skin and the hinge so I assume it is ok.
I then re-clecoed all together and the fit was really good.
Last step for this piece is manually countersinking these two attach holes that will take AN426-3 rivets. These came out nice.
Tuesday visited Fred (buddy builder) and his Japanese girlfriend who cooked some wonderfull Japanese food.
Wednesday I worked on the other replacement part.
I laid the bad part back to back with the new one to matchdrill the web-attach holes.
Then drilled the holes and dimpled.
Finally, the part I messed up last time, installing the counterweight and drilling through the end rib of this part. Came out much nicer now.
Thursday I prepared all parts for priming. The picture below shows all rib parts for both elevators. Cleaned with silikon entferner and lightly scuffed up with scotchbrite.
I noticed during final inspection before priming that one of the dimpled holes for the screws that hold the counterweight in the counterweight skin had a tiny crack in it.
I grinded it down a litlle with the handgrinder with 1" by 1" scotchbrite wheel and managed to get rid of the potential crack point. (see upper hole in the image)
I didn't have to take away much material. You don't even notice on the other side.
Satuday morning, I cleaned the parts for priming again with silikon entferner and shot a nice layer of Zinc Chromate on them.
The painting went very well and smooth this time. I start to get the hang of this although I'm feeling always very unsure to get the right settings on the gun.
The good news is... tomorrow is RIVETTTING TIME !!!! jippeeeeee...
